Salvador Dali was a presentational artist whom joined many Dadaist artists in the effort to change art. His name was the first thing that caught my attention and finding more about him gained my attention much more. Researching his life I found out he lived and had a love for his home Spain. His artworks are very unique as they are all representational art forms of every day objects. In addition even his portraits stand out considering that they are out of the ordinary. Salvador Dali, a surrealist artists whom joined with various Dada artists to change the art industry of the 20th century and as a result has had various museums displaying his work.

#21 Inkblot

Inkblots, used as a form of art and as a psychological test by rorschach. To begin with, there are many people whom use the inkblot system as a form of art whether it has a meaning or not. In class we created our own inkblots that had no representation at first until the details were added based on my views. To continue, the inkblot method is also used as a form of testing one's mind. Rorschach developed such a project in mind because there are various ways of looking and depicting such work letting the doctor know what's on your mind. Finally looking at this inkblot image above it looks like just simple black lines that flow so gently and nice. From this image I can look at it as a insect, a ballerina/dancer outfit, or even a ballerina dancing but the real significance I don't know. Inkblots are very interesting with their simple details they create their own meaning that can represent so much just like the beautiful inkblot shown above..

#20 Dada

Dada was a non-art movement during the times of World War I and World War II. Artists as a result of war used a recreation of art to express their feeling. For instance many artists came up with art that made no sense at all to the viewers as humor. Another example includes how many artists used existing art pieces and adding their own touch to them. The Mona Lisa presented above is changed by Duchamp as he has added a moustache and goatee to her. Lastly the spread of Dadaism was international and that's exactly how it was represented by various places. Various countries took such for of dadaism as a serious movement for change but in places such as the United States dadaism also became a source for entertainment and humor. Dada, the non art non-movement that brought forth several change in the art industry as a change was constructed.

The art of making a portrait whether it is of a person, or animal is beautiful. To begin with, finding an image of a person to represent me. Looking for a person with the same name as me was the first part now switching a 5x7 image onto a 10x14 canvas was the next step. To continue, drawing the image was a big step contributing to the project. By creating a grid i was able to construct the 5x7 picture onto a paper twice as big but much easier focusing on the details. Lastly the painting process using one color but various tints and shades. My main color was red but mixing it with black and white I was able to create different tints which is essential to the image as it has various shades and values. My portrait making experience was one of a kind as I had a process to follow before achieving overall completion finding the image then drawing it was the first part but with the use of colors I was able to allow my portrait to come to life.

Yuyi Morales. Illustration from Just in Case: A Trickster Tale and Spanish Alphabet Book. A Neal Porter Book published by Roaring Brook Press, 2008

"Just in Cade: A trickster Tale and Alphabet Book" a book from which this illustration was taken from. To begin with this image uses various bright colors. From what it looks like the decorations and cake was all used to represent a time of celebration. To continue, the various kids looking at the older woman can show either of two things she made it for them or they made it for her. The expressions on everyone's face shows happiness and surprise. Lastly the colors used around the room, the clothing, and decorations. From this I assume that the artist was trying to portray a happy time.

Ester Hernández
If This Is Death – I Like It, 1991
http://www.nationalmuseumofmexicanart.org/printdrawing5.html

If This Is Death-I Like It a portrait painting done by Ester Hernandez. Social is a way this portrait can be seen. For example, death is a touchy topic that is inevitable and many people fear. The political aspect of this image includes the idea of death. To continue, when it comes to death at times politics come in the picture such as the idea of death penalties. Death and religion go hand in hand at times. If This Is Death-I Like It shows the beauty of death and after it such as the belief of heaven, the after life, and reincarnation showing happiness brought with death. With this portrait painting Ester shows a intellectual aspect as well. Writing this blog about this image made me think of the various messages that this image portrays more in depth. When it comes to technology I fail to see this aspect within the image. Lastly when it comes to economy and death they come together as well. When death occurs it is up to the family to provide the proper farewell such as burial or cremations but this is nothing without money. Ester Hernandez provides an image entitled "If this is death-I like it" but this image goes beyond the visual as the SPRITE categories are applied.

Ashtray image from the American Icons series
Carrie Mae Weems' image taken from American Icons was something that I could relate to not by its title. The photo displays a old fashioned couch and table near it. This is something that reminds me of my grandmother's house in Mexico. Her taste and household furniture are very old fashion but elegant at the very same time. Another thing includes how the picture is in black and white. Being this color gives it yet more of an old fashioned effect that I enjoy.

Always imagine a note that was once placed onto someones car then misplaced to be found once again. The message her is something nice that almost everyone can relate to. Imagination something we have and use whether we want to or not. It's something that makes us all different considering we have different imaginations and perceptions of them as well. Another thing I found interesting was all the designs and details presented in the note. It's a nice detail for someone to even leave such a note for someone. Always imagine was what this person decided to call it, and I would love to do so because imagination can take you where you want to be if you just believe.

Post #13 Nostalgia with a fuchia dress

Nostalgia can be described as a sentimental recollection in which mixed feelings are present. A fuchsia quinceañera dress brings me nostalgia as it makes me both smile and cry. For example, a quinceañera is a time of festivity as it is to celebrate for a young lady as its a transition from being a girl to being a woman. My quince dress was fuchsia similar to the one presented this image reminds me of the happiness such celebration brought to me and my family. Another thing includes how my quince was celebrated beautifully in Michoacan, Mexico a place where I had not gone for years and longed to go. Celebrating my quince in Mexico where I badly wanted to go made me that much more happier being able to celebrate differently with the loved one's. Wearing a dress, feeling like a princess is part of the quinceañera tradition after enjoying the time all that's left are photos and memories just as this fuchsia dress created nostalgia for me. (:

Marlene Dumas
Marlene Dumas
Marlene Dumas as an artist has created many piece on several things. But being a woman has also brought forth a variety of links that could be made with real life and her work. Postmodern; focuses on the idea of moving beyond the works of modernism. Marlene's main artworks focuses on the way society and politics depicts women, children, and people of color which are things that should be getting addressed in real life anyway. Many of the postmodern artistic values are depicted in her artworks but they are essential toward the overall message she is trying to convey.
